Chukwunalu Praise Chukwuma

CHUKWUNALU PRAISE CHUKWUMA

I am the first born of a family of two children. I am from Ika North-East Local Government Area, Delta State but born and raised in Benin City, Edo State. All through my elementary school and high school education, I maintained the top five percent rank in my class through hard work, self-discipline and self-confidence. I graduated from elementary school with the best result and from high school as the salutatorian of my class.

I am a science-oriented person and having a mother who is a Biology teacher makes it more interesting. I usually ask the WHY questions when it comes to scientific observations. Since it’s a WHY question, my mother often gives me the Biology part of the answer and tells me she’s not a chemist. Currently, I’m obsessed with connecting Biology and Chemistry therefore, seeing Biochemistry as a potential major. I represented my high school at science competitions at state levels – Society of Petroleum Engineer, UNIBEN Chapter (I and some students came out third position) and RCF (UNIBEN Chapter) Quiz competition (I and another student come out first position). I also took part in STAN Competitions/ Exams.

Outside my academics, I’m interested in music. I sing and play the keyboard/ piano at my church. I was also the leader of the student body of my high school, that is, the Head Boy for the 2015/2016 session. I was also the leader of my high school’s Bible Club and also the secretary to my church’s youth body.

The United States offers the best education in the world, so I have always wanted to study in the U. S. I have thought of it most times but I didn’t really know how to go about it. A teacher gave me an application form to fill out in my final year at high school and it led me into becoming an Opportunity Funds Grantee at EducationUSA, Lagos. Like I always say, “No great thing comes easily; it’s not easy but not impossible.” I had to get used to writing essays, which I didn’t really like at high school and so, those words kept me going. My interview was not so convenient; it was actually the first time I was travelling that far without my mother or any family member but it was successful because I believed I could do it. The EducationUSA Advising Center Lagos had great impact on me. I always thought I was very hardworking but I discovered I had to do more if I wanted to study in the U. S. My EducationUSA Advisers where always there to keep me in check at all the steps and I’m really grateful to them for their advice, words of encouragement, time and patience. I also thank my mother for believing in me and encouraging me and most of all, I am grateful to God.

I got admitted to Wabash College, IN,USA with a scholarship where I am currently a freshman  majoring in Biochemistry with hopes of proceeding to medical school to become an orthopedist in order to help my sister and other children who have problems with locomotion.

I would love to give back to my country by coming back after my studies to make things work in Nigeria. The United States of America is where it is today because some persons chose to make it so and they took responsibility and I believe Nigerians can do the same.
